The Damned Things – Music Monday 12/20/10

Well, I was planning on doing more than two #MusicMonday posts in 2010 but unfortunatly I got a little too busy. So here’s too hoping for more than two in 2011.

This week I wanted to feature The Damned Things which is actually a supergroup that contains members from Anthrax, Falloutboy, and Every Time I Die.

I was a big fan of Keith Buckley’s singing voice in Every Time I Die so when I heard about the formation of this group I was pumped. Their debut Album “Ironiclast” is a solid rock effort with a slightly old school feel. Some really catchy choruses, grinding riffs and guitar solos make this enjoyable for fans of the members regular bands…or anyone who just enjoys some good rock and roll.

Behind The Scenes: “Tonight We Feel Alive” Music Video Shoot

I recently got the opportunity to work behind the scenes on a Four Year Strong music video directed by Tom Colella . The video was shot mainly with the Red One and a Phantom Cam but also features about 15% footage from the Canon 7D. Here are some behind the scenes photos I took at the shoot:

Music Monday 5/17/10 – Mastodon + Miranda Lambert

I’m going to start posting music suggestions every Monday in correlation with the twitter hashtag #musicmonday.

Today I want to feature 2 drastically different songs and videos that have been stuck in my head for the past week.

The first is Oblivion by Mastodon:

I never really knew Mastodon other than a band on a Need For Speed game for PS2 I used to have back in the day. I shot photos of them last year but still really never gave them a listen until recently when “The Wolf is Loose” came up on a Pandora playlist. That song stayed in my itunes recently played and my head for a week and I became curious about the rest of their music so I hoped on Last.fm and discovered their most popular song: “Oblivion”.

Deemed as “Progressive Sludge Metal” Mastodon has a sound as unique as their genre. “Oblivion” has a catchy dreamy chorus that has drawn my ears in non-stop over the last week since I heard it for the first time. I can’t really pinpoint any other songs in my library that have a hard but surreal sound. I get a feeling similar when I listen to A Perfect Circle but the unique vocals of multiple members of Mastodon make them stand apart.

The video for Oblivion is my new favorite music video. Not only does it compliment the song perfectly but it looks straight up BADASS! Best greenscreen, compositing, and VFX on a music video I have seen in a long time. The grading, backdrops and motions are just beautiful!

My second recommendation this week is “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert. I’ve been following Miranda on twitter for awhile now but was not up to date on her music. I was getting dressed in a hotel in South Carolina this weekend and happened to catch the video for “The House That Built Me” on TV. Her soft vocals and cute southern voice caught my ear. I started watching the video and immediately got a sense of nostalgia for home and youth.

As you can see by my 2 selections this week, I have a very versatile taste in music. I can’t say I like a specific genre or even artist 100% of the time, but if it catches my ear, you’ll find it here!
